THE BIRD HAS LANDED

Poison City B rewind with their launch product, The Bird, a lager - but there is more to come.

Fledgling local brewing company launches its first product, a lager called The Bird

Durban businessman Andre Schubert has found new wings. After a long career in running successful restaurants, he has now turned his hand to brewing craft beer.
It’s a long-held dream for Andre, and his partner  Graeme Bird, who have just launched Poison City Brewing and its first beer.

CAFE 1999 – STILL A PLAYER IN THE RESTAURANT SCENE

Big flavours in these bit part portions at Cafe 1999.

Big flavours in these bit part portions at Cafe 1999.

Cafe 1999
Silvervause Centre, 117 Vause Rd, Durban
Call: 031 202 3406
Open: Monday to Saturday

Opened in 1999 by Andre Schubert, Cafe 1999 has shown remarkable staying power in an industry particularly vulnerable during times of recession, and to fickle diners in perpetual pursuit of the new and trendy.  Even more admirable is that present owners, Marcelle and Sean Roberts, have not only managed to keep Cafe 1999’s doors open 16 years on, but have also opened two other successful eateries; Unity in Vause Road and S43 in the highly desirable station precinct.
Both Unity and S43 tick all the right boxes when it comes to being trendy: chilled vibe, right location, edgy decor, reasonably priced cafe food and a range of craft beers brewed at S43. Unsurprisingly, they are hugely popular with twenty-somethings.
But, if you want classy food and a laid-back vibe, Cafe 1999 ticks those boxes.  A friend and I had a very pleasant lunch there on a recent Friday. Innovative food, consistency, a good wine list and impeccable service lift Cafe 1999 well above the ordinary.
That the restaurant was barely a quarter full on a Friday lunchtime suggests the new generation of restaurant- goers are not interested in fine dining when they can have a hearty Mexican burger at S43 for half the price.  Alternatively, perhaps it’s because people who can afford and enjoy fine food and wine have moved north of Durban. Or perhaps there are too many fine dining restaurants and too few people who can afford and enjoy them.
No clear answer here although I suspect it’s a bit of all of the above.

RIVER TOWN STREET FOOD FESTIVAL

Locals rose around the food stalls at the Durban Street Food Festival on its final day.

Locals browse around the food stalls at the Durban Street Food Festival on its final day.

The Durban Street Food Festival at Rivertown was a good idea, but there was plenty of room for improvement, writes Ingrid Shevlin

The Durban Street Food Festival held from September 24 to 27 at 8 Morrison Street was a great initiative. Food, music, art were on offer along with the promise that visitors would get to experience the melting pot of flavours, cultures, sounds and sights that make Durban the cosmopolitan smorgasbord it is today – in the words of the organisers, that is.
And to some extent they did.
Such intiatives should be encouraged not dismissed. We need more not less, especially those that give young entrepreneurs a chance to show off, market themselves in other words.
As it turned out on Sunday it was vibey and busy with locals taking full advantage of the warm weather to enjoy the good things Durban has to offer.
But there were some dissatisfied rumblings and hopefully the organisers will listen without taking offence if they are planning any more such events. Here are some issues that need to be raised. But first the good stuff….

CULINARY JOURNEY

Cakes to die for at a patisserie in Paris - more works of art than food.

More cakes to die for

Hard to resist this display at a patisserie shop in Paris.

Ripped off by Harrods disappointed by Paris’s Chinese food and disdained by the French waiters, Ingrid Shevlin, shares her alternative culinary experience abroad.

After spending a month in the UK, and four days in Paris, I wish I could report amazing dining experiences in the French capital, at Nopi, Ottolenghi’s eatery in London, or at any of Jamie Oliver’s restaurants in London (Fifteen, Diner, Covent Garden). Or even at that exclusive Japanese restaurant in London that seats only nine and has just won its second Michelin star. It charges a staggering £300 for a set meal, which is about R6 000.
But with the crippling exchange rate – R20 to the pound – those were far beyond my means and dreams. But eat out I did with some interesting results.
