Call 031 563 0925
Open: Thursday and Saturday 9am to 11pm
Fridays from 9am to midnight
Sunday to Wednesday 9am to 10pm

THE INTRO
RocoMamas is so head-poundingly noisy that if you are looking for a quiet place to eat and chill, go elsewhere. On the upside it’s perfect if you are on a blind date and dread the thought of the conversation turning awkward.
If you are, don’t you worry. He or she won’t hear a word say. You can sing the national anthem, quote poetry or recite the United Nation’s declaration on slavery and all your date will see is your lips move, will assume you are making intelligible conversation and smile politely.

THE HOUSE OF VETKOEK
Corner Brand and Cromwell Roads, Glenwood
Call: 031 201 1999
Open 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday.
Closed Sundays

INTRO
I was seriously bummed when my favorite secondhand bookshop in Glenwood closed down and was reborn as a vetkoek takeaway. Although I love food and books in equal measure no amount of vetkoek was going to compensate for the loss of books. Anyway,  vetkoek is hardly haute cuisine and who eats it anyway. As it turned out, I miscalculated the appeal of deep fried food; comfort food that is.
The vetkoek has since became a hit and is attracting a steady stream of Glenwood customers. I suppose Colonel Saunders of KFC fame knew a thing or two.
Even better the books have been reintroduced.

OLD TOWN ITALY

39 Meridian Drive, Meridian Park, Umhlanga Rocks
031 566 5008
Open: Monday to Saturday 7am to 7pm; Sunday 7am to 6pm (kitchen closes at 4pm

THE INTRO
Old Town Italy is a new cafe/deli/speciality grocery store in Umhlanga Rocks which is the brainchild of the clever Remo’s team. An odd name for a one-stop food store I thought at first. Even odder is its location on Meridian Drive, at the edge of Gateway’s business precinct, which is hardly on anyone’s way home. In fact on anyone’s way anywhere.

INTRO
Who could resist an invitation to lunch at the Oyster Box and sample sushi from their new seafood bar?
Not me.
Not only was weather balmy enough to to sit out on the terrace and enjoy the amazing view, but the sushi and seafood were great and the monkeys hugely entertaining.
It seems the monkeys which roam the neighbourhood are particularly enamored of the sugar sachets on the terrace tables.
Despite the many hilarious attempts by the staff to dissuade then, they kept swooping down from the roof, scampering over to the tables and grabbing as many sachets as they could before leaping back to safety on the roof. And then they came back for more.

Open for lunch and dinner but closed Mondays and Sunday evenings

INTRO
If this review of Greedy Buddha reads like I’m damning it with faint praise, I am. In a way.
It’s simply that the new Greedy Buddha at Gateway is not as good as its first incarnation in Durban North. But if you hadn’t experienced the food there, you would probably disagree with this review.
The Durban North version was a hole in the wall kind of place where dining was confined to a windswept terrace. When it rained it was bleak.
But the food, Asian fusion, was sublime.
