GADGET MAGIC

GADGET MADGETS

I can’t resist a gadget, kitchen or DIY. The daughter and I haunt DIY shops looking for anything to make life easier or more practical. The same goes for kitchen shops. In this case it doesn’t have to make life more practical, just more fun. I have so many gadgets I’ve had to store them in my spare room. Some gather dust until they are rediscovered and then I wonder how I managed without them. Like the Spirelli Spiral Slicer. Now I can’t live without it. The Kenwood K-Mix had pride of place on my kitchen table until the baking passion faded. But I never stop looking for the new or fantastic or the cute or the stylish. Here are a few gadget I picked up from www.yuppiechef.co.za from where they can be ordered

Avocado hugger

Avocado Saver Hugger
I’m not sure I can resist the Avocado Saver Hugger (love the name!) since I love avocados, but always end up with half an avocado, which turns brown however I store it. What the avocado hugger does is fit over half an avocado to help keep it fresher for longer. The set comes in two sizes to ensure you have cover for both large and small avos. The huggers also come with a pit pocket that can be pushed in or out depending if the half you are saving has a pit. Keeping things fresh means less waste and more taste.
Cost: R129.

Adjustable Cake Slicing collar

Adjustable Cake Slicing collar

Adjustable Cake Slicing collar
Mary Berry- host on the Great British Bake Off – makes slicing a cake horizontally easy. But if you’ve ever tried to slice a cake to create even layers, you’ll know that it’s easier said than done and you could end up with uneven layers and a lopsided cake. But the Zenker cake slicer is the answer. You simply slip it over your cooled cake, and choose from a variety of thicknesses. Slice through your cake, remove the collar, and voila! Perfect, even layers ready for icing.
Cost: R329

My Big Tea teapot (pictured on top)
This is hard to resist and so cute. My Big Tea teapot is an all-in-one teapot and tea cosy. The knitted cover helps to keep the tea hot (naturally). I love the shape too. The teapot holds 1.5 litres and is dishwasher-safe.
Cost: R799

Spirelli Spiral Julienne Slicer

Whether you are keen on a raw food or a low carb diet, or you simply like your veggies to fall onto your plate in soft spirals and look pretty, the spirelli is a keeper, and I love mine. It’s like a noodle maker for your veggies, allowing you to produce colourful curls. Use them as a substitute for spaghetti in a pasta dish, in a fresh stirfry or  as garnish on a sushi plate.
It’s easy to use and easy to clean. Yuppie Chef has reduced the price from R399 to R299. A bonus that.

Gianni Glass Jar with Blue Lid

Gianni Glass Jar with Blue Lid
How whimsical is this jar by Alessi. Is Gianni trying to get in or out? Either way, the Gianni Glass Jar will bring a smile to your face. Practical and playful, they are great for storing everything from rice and beans to sugar, salt and coffee beans. The silicone lid seals hermetically, keeping bugs, air and dirt out, and freshness in. And Gianni? Nobody can figure out which way he’s going either.
Pricey at R309 but whimsy seldom comes cheap. – Ingrid Shevlin, August 2015
